Volunteer attorneys needed for Bucks County eviction prevention program in Lower Makefield courtroom
(updated Oct. 20, 2024)
Attorneys are needed every Thursday afternoon to volunteer in a Bucks County courtroom in Lower Makefield Township. This pilot project is a partnership to prevent evictions and started in 2023! To learn more or sign up to volunteer, contact Megan Reinprecht at mreinprecht@lasp.org.
A Bucks County pilot project provides legal representation to tenants who do not have an attorney and who volunteer to participate, while also connecting them with social services. Research shows that tenants with legal representation have significantly better outcomes in landlord-tenant court.
Evictions can have devastating short- and long-term impacts on renters, including homelessness and negative health outcomes, and can severely limit future housing opportunities.
The program launched July 27, 2023 in Lower Makefield Township. The Bucks County Bar Association Pro Bono Committee, Legal Aid of Southeastern PA (LASP), and the Bucks County Opportunity Council (BCOC) are collaborating on the effort, with support from the Bucks County Department of Housing and Community Development. The project is occurring in Magisterial District Court 07-1-11 in Judge Corryn Kronnagel’s courtroom, located in Morrisville.
How to volunteer
Pro bono attorneys are invited to volunteer for the project! The hearings take place every Thursday at 1 p.m. at Judge Kronnagel’s MDJ courtroom located at 31 E. Cleveland Ave., Morrisville, PA 19067.
To learn more or sign up to volunteer, email Megan Reinprecht at mreinprecht@lasp.org.
Limited-scope representation is available. If a volunteer chooses, there may at times be an opportunity for a volunteer to decide to provide extended representation. Choose any Thursday(s).

Chester County Pro Bono
Thank you to attorneys, paralegals and others who volunteer their time to expand access to justice in Chester County!
Volunteer opportunities for 2025 Chester County Mobile Home Tax Reassessment Project
Volunteer attorneys, paralegals and community members are invited to assist with the 2025 Chester County Mobile Home Tax Reassessment Project, which runs from February to summer.
You do NOT have to volunteer for all months of the project! Contact bdoyle@lasp.org.
Are you passionate about making a difference in your community? Volunteer for the Chester County Mobile Home Tax Reassessment Project and help mobile home ownerrs prepare tax appeals.
The 2025 project will begin the second week of February, and appointments with mobile home owners likely will start in March. The project is a collaboration between LASP and Chester County United Way.
Volunteers are especially needed from May through the end of July.
LASP needs volunteers, especially students interested in conducting interviews and assisting with writing the appeals. Contact Brian Doyle, Staff Attorney & Chester County Pro Bono Coordinator, to be added to the interest list and schedule an informational Zoom session to go over project details.
Attorneys will be needed later in the summer for hearings. Volunteer opportunities are also available for paralegals and community members.
Multiple opportunities are available, and you do NOT need to volunteer for all months of the project.
"We welcome all who are eager to contribute," Brian said. He can be reched at bdoyle@lasp.org or 484-416-4259 x5210.
Mobile home values depreciate over time, unlike other forms of real estate. Because the tax assessment system does not addess this reality, mobile home taxes are accurate only in the first years after purchase. Since 2019, the project has resulted in over 1,000 successful tax appeal, with a savings of over $800 per mobile home owner per year.
Learn more about the project and its impact on LASP’s webpage.
To learn more or to volunteer for the Mobile Home Tax Reassessment Project or in another area of the law, please contact Brian Doyle, Staff Attorney and Chester County Pro Bono Coordinator, at 484-416-4259 x5210 or bdoyle@lasp.org.

Pro bono volunteers are needed after disasters
In January 2025, LASP continues to help survivors of Hurricane Ida three years after the Sept. 1, 2021 storm prompted a federal disaster declaration in Bucks, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery counties. This work is funded through a grant from the Legal Services Corporation.
If a disaster happens at a future date in southeastern PA, there will be a need for pro bono attorneys to help low-income survivors. Here are some resources if you want to consider disaster preparedness from the perspective of an attorney or legal professional.

(Feb. 23, 2022) The Pennsylvania Continuing Legal Education Board has formally approved CLE credit for pro bono service. The Board also announced changes in rules that offer lawyers the option of completing a portion of their CLE requirement with credits earned through pro bono service.
The PA Supreme Court issued an Order on Jan. 31, 2022. Pa.R.C.L.E. Rule 108 (e) and related CLE Regulations have been updated to reflect this change.
The new amendments allow lawyers to earn one (1) CLE credit for every five (5) hours of pro bono service completed through an Accredited Provider of Pro Bono CLE. A maximum of three (3) credit hours earned in this manner may be applied towards the annual CLE requirement. Work is required to be completed through legal service providers accredited by the CLE Board and performed for a person of limited means or charitable organization. Note: Legal Aid of Southeastern PA is an accredited CLE provider!

Retired attorneys: Emeritus status allows you to provide pro bono service
(updated Feb. 3, 2025)
Are you a retired attorney with some time to give back? You can now apply for emeritus attorney license status to do pro bono work! Pennsylvania Rule of Disciplinary Enforcement 403 creates an emeritus status for retired attorneys to provide pro bono service to Legal Aid of Southeastern PA and other nonprofit legal aid programs.
“There is a significant gap between the need for pro bono legal services for the most vulnerable and the availability of those services in the community,” Former Disciplinary Board Chair Doug Leonard said when the program launched in 2018.
As of Feb. 3, 2025, there are just 51 emeritus attorneys across Pennsylvania. The Commonwealth has 67 counties.
In an Aug. 4, 2022 social media post, the PA Disciplinary Board reminded attorneys about Emeritus Status:
Emeritus attorneys fulfill valuable roles in the community by bolstering legal aid and other nonprofits to help close the gap between the need for and the availability of free legal services.

“The need for legal services among the poor is overwhelming. According to an American Bar Association study, at least 40% of low and moderate-income households experience a legal problem each year. Yet studies show that the collective civil legal aid effort is meeting only about 20% of the legal needs of low-income people.”
