BROOKHAVEN – State Rep. Leanne Krueger will host a free Clean Slate Expungement Clinic with Legal Aid of Southeastern PA (LASP) Thursday, Sept. 26, 2024 beginning at 6 p.m. at Brookhaven Municipal Center, 2 Cambridge Road, Brookhaven.

Attorneys will provide information and discuss options that may be available for clearing a person’s criminal record. If expungement is not an option, additional resources will be available.

Registration for the free clinic is required. Interested residents can ask a question or sign up for appointments, which start at 6 p.m., by calling Rep. Krueger’s office at 610-534-6880 or emailing RepKrueger@pahouse.net.

People seeking expungement can bring case information, including a copy of court records and orders, and must not currently be in violation or on probation/parole.

Rep. Krueger said Pennsylvania became the first state in the nation to pass a bipartisan clean slate law in 2018. She said lawmakers have since worked together to improve it, most recently passing Clean Slate 3.0, which took effect in February.

“Clean slate laws recognize that people make mistakes, but those mistakes should not prevent them from securing housing, education or employment when they’ve turned their lives around,” Rep. Krueger said. “I want to make sure that people know there are new options to seal minor offenses that might be keeping them from moving forward with their lives. At this clinic, residents can talk with experts and receive important information about Pennsylvania’s clean slate laws, and maybe get the fresh start they need.”

Rep. Krueger and her staff will be at the clinic to provide information on state-related programs and services.

MEDIA - The Delaware County Community College’s Paralegal Studies Program will host a hybrid Criminal Expungement Clinic in collaboration with Legal Aid of Southeastern PA, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2023.

Attend in-person in the Café area of the Academic Building at the College’s Marple Campus, 901 S. Media Line Road, Media, PA, 19063, or attend virtually.

To register for either the in-person or virtual clinic, go to www.dccc.edu/expungement-clinic. The clinic will try to accommodate walk-ins, but advance registration is preferred.

Under the supervision of attorneys from Legal Aid of Southeastern PA, Delaware County Community College paralegal students will assist people in determining if they are eligible to have prior arrests or convictions expunged or sealed from their record. Some convictions cannot be expunged but may be sealed so that they are not of public record. Paralegals may not practice law or otherwise provide legal services directly to the public except as permitted by law.

Criminal record expungement may be available for:

  • Non-conviction dispositions (charges were dismissed, withdrawn, nolle prossed, not guilty, etc.

  • ARD/Section 17 if you have completed all of the requirements

  • Summary convictions if you have five subsequent years free from arrest

  • Summary convictions if you were under 18 years of age at the time of the offense, are now over 18 AND six months have passed since you completed the sentence and paid the fine

  • Misdemeanor and felony convictions if you are 70+ years old and have a ten-year, arrest-free period since the end of your sentence (including probation or parole)

  • If acquitted on all charges, expungement is automatic

Due to the location of individuals’ criminal record, such as in Philadelphia or outside of Pennsylvania, they may be referred to another legal organization for help.

For more information, email Delaware County Community College’s Director of Paralegal Studies Nilufar A. Jamir at paralegalstudies@dccc.edu or leave a message at 610-359-5263.
